WHAT IS A UTI?
A UTI is the presence of bacteria in the urethra, bladder, ureters, or kidney. Urine in a bladder is free of bacteria. Bacteria may enter the urinary tract through the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body) and can multiply, which can cause an infection. About 80 - 90% of UTIs are caused by E. coli. If the infection is not treated promptly it can lead to more serious infections.
